Biography

Carmel Anderson creates art in her studio over looking the Tongass Narrows of the Pacific Ocean in Southeast Alaska. While painting and sculpting, Carmel observes seals, whales, fishing boats and cruise ships as they pass by her creative haven. Moving to Alaska was a gift for her own life journey and her art, for Alaskan women have become her inspiration - a spirited, resilient and creative sisterhood!

Carmel received her bachelor’s degree from the Art Institute of Chicago with a focus in Fashion Design. Following graduation she completed an apprenticeship with Seventh Avenue designer Perry Ellis. After many successful and award winning years as a fashion designer in New York City and in Atlanta, Georgia, she returned to her passion of fine art. Over the years she has worked hard to create her own style of painting by pushing the boundaries of traditional watercolor technique. By mixing in other media, Carmel has been able to create colorful, textural work with a transparency in a style that is loose and open to surprise. Carmel believes that her unique style was created and discovered predominantly as a self-taught painter. Carmel has also expanded her work into three-dimensional work using paper clay, wire and found objects. These sculpture pieces take on their own form and voice as they come into being.

Recently, Carmel has been focusing on the figurative subject of women - combining her love of fine art, experience in fashion, her interest in the inner self of women and the beauty that we all posess with the potential of bringing it into our world.
